Coloured Ash Crotch
11½” x 1¾”
Shellac Finish

This ash crotch looked fairly unremarkable with its initial turning. To liven it up a bit and to pop the figure, I decided to experiment with colouring. After shaping and sanding to 220 grit, I first applied a blue. I then cut that back with 320 grit sandpaper, removing the blue from all but the deeper grain. I next applied a green and cut that back with 400 grit. Lastly, I lightly applied a yellow an buffed the piece with a fine abrasive pad. Several thin coats of shellac were sprayed on and buffed again with a fine abrasive pad.
