Wormy Ash Vase
(scorched)
13” x 6”
Lacquer Finish
This hollow form was created from one of four ash logs that lay in my driveway for years. I coated the end grain with latex paint to prevent them from splitting and cracking. That did not, however, prevent insects from infesting the wood. After turning, hollowing and sanding, I used dental picks to scrape out the powder trails left by the insect larva. I then took a torch to the piece, buffed it with an abrasive pad and sprayed on thin coats of lacquer. Note: One of the logs did not survive the hollowing process. You win some, you loose some.
